2012 The Year That Was… Part 1

The year 2012 will forever be in my memories. The London Olympic Games is the second greatest thing to ever happen to me; first being the day that I married the love of my life. But the memories of 2012 couldn’t have happened without 2011…

That was the year my wife and I moved to the city of Chicago and decided to pursue this Olympic dream. My wife, running addict, supported me emotionally and financially to help me do something I had never conquered. The hardest thing for anyone to do is doing something you’ve never done. You first have to believe that it is possible, no matter the circumstances. People think that “Greatness” is something that only few people are born with. Talent you have naturally, Skill is only achieved after hours and hours of beating on your craft. The summer of 2011 to the summer of 2012 was hours and days and weeks of beating on my craft. I pushed my limits every time I laced my shoes, with only one thought… qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games! One thought, One goal. There was no room to be realistic. Why be realistic? The moment I decided to shoot for the stars, I got it done. I just waited for it to be done and showed the world who the real Sam Vazquez is. Not the rumors, that “I don’t like to train and that I’m un-coachable”. I’m just passionate about running and nothing will stand in my way of achieving my goal.

After a long year of training while being in less-than-fortunate financial circumstances, my life-long dream of becoming an Olympian was complete at the last possible moment. June 16 th , 2012 was the night I ran a life personal record of 3:37.6, officially punching my ticket to London while also setting a Puerto Rican National record.

That night I didn’t sleep, not from the stomach ache I had acquired by pushing the limits of my body but from the excitement that I can now call myself an Olympian and that things will hopefully change for the good of my family…

To be continued…
